Catholic Symposium - Disability Education

16/6/2009

St Lucy's staff and parents participated in a symposium on Catholic-run disability education in Western Sydney on 2 June 2009.

Speakers ranged from theologians and business leaders to academics and parents, all looking for ways to improve services to special needs children and better share what they say is a common responsibility.

The number of students with disabilities in Catholic schools has quadrupled in the last 20 years but government funding has far from kept pace.

The symposium made three recommendations:

  • to establish a task force,
  • prepare a working paper for the Conference of Bishops of ACT and NSW, and
  • develop an information and awareness programme for all areas of the Catholic community.
