Telstra Foundation Community Leadership Program

17/10/2008

Through the Telstra Foundation's Social Innovation Grant program, St Lucy's All Abilities Art and Theatre Workshop program has received a grant of $120,000 over three years.

As part of the Social Innovation Grant program, the Telstra Foundation is also helping build the capacity of the leaders in the not-for-profit organisations that it supports. This is done by conducting specialised training courses for key leaders, as well as pairing the not-for-profit organisation CEO with a Telstra senior executive to establish a co-coaching or mentor relationship. This is known as the Telstra Foundation Community Leadership Program.

St Lucy's Principal Jo Karaolis and Theatre Project Co-ordinator Alessandra Picone have both participated in project management training as part of the Community Leadership Program. In addition, Jo Karaolis has been privileged to be mentored by Ian Clark, Financial Controller at Telstra. In this role, Ian has made several visits to St Lucy's School and is also providing teleconferencing support in relation to management and financial planning issues.

Ian speaks warmly of his relationship with St Lucy's: "I came back to Australia after many years working overseas in the United States because I wanted my life to be full and meaningful. Mentoring Jo Karaolis and getting to understand the lives of parents whose children have disabilities has given me the broader perspective I was seeking. I am glad to be a part of the great work that the staff are doing at St Lucy's."
