Africa comes to St Lucy's

19/6/2006

Sr Shiela from Kopanang Community will be visiting St Lucy's School during the week of 17 July 2006.

In preparation for her visit and as part of our charity fundraiser, St Lucy's children are decorating small canvases with an image of Africa on Friday, 23 June. The decorated canvases will then form part of our welcome to Sr Shiela in July. It will be lots of fun and plenty of activities.

The South African Kopanang Community has been devastated by AIDS. Sr Shiela has brought art to the women and through this they have been able to earn an income for the community. The community desperately needs more money for more art materials and for their school. They also need money for medicine as many of the children also have AIDS.

The culmination of Sr Shiela's visit will be Thursday Assembly, 20 July 2006 at 1.30 pm when St Lucy's will give her our 'gift of money' for the Kopanang Community. All are welcome to this special assembly.

Ballet at Sydney Opera House

31/5/2006

Wednesday, 11 May 2006 has given our children and staff from Violet and Aqua classes a memorable experience - a visit to the Opera House to watch the Australian Ballet School practice.

Our children were enthralled as they watched the ballet students go through their warm up and exercises. Imagine their joy to see a full dress performance of excerpts from Sleeping Beauty, Giselle, and Continuum.

Memories are made by these type of excursions.

Playground Taking Shape

6/2/2006

The playground area at St Lucy's School is certainly going to be one where creativity, imagination, curiosity, learning and fun will be the order of the day.

Thanks to the generosity of many companies, individuals, local council and parents great strides are taking place during the summer holidays to provide an innovative "play" area for our special children. A working bee in mid-December that brought out our muscle-bound and desk-bound parents and friends proved a huge success as notice boards, sand and back bench seats were removed all to the shrill of a jackhammer.

A new concrete base has been laid and work is underway on a bike track for our children to learn the road rules, as well as a climbing wall to enable them to learn that helping each other and achieving can be done together. A bus stop for our children to learn that they must sit still, be quiet and patient. Touch sensitive equipment, and a kaleidoscope with brilliant patterns are just some of the extras.

Our children will be able to enjoy their morning tea and lunch breaks under bright new huge shade areas as well as using the opportunity to discover what's new in their playground.

It is just one step in our program to use our playground as a true "play" area that will benefit our special children.
