The start right program
The aim of the Start Right Program is to prepare children with special needs for success in a regular classroom. The emphasis is on
developing confidence, independence and early literacy and numeracy skills.
The program is designed as an introduction to school. It aims to lay a strong foundation in literacy and numeracy while developing those behaviours which facilitate learning and socialization. The underlying belief is that the building of an individual's self esteem especially in early school experiences, will have a positive long-term impact on future educational potential.
The Start Right content covers: - Communication
- Appropriate social behaviour
- Independence
- Mobility and orientation
- Personal management
- Daily living skills
- Fine motor skills
- Gross motor movement
- Academic skills at Kindergarten/Year 1 level, particularly literacy
- Sensory development
- Creative Arts
- Co-operative learning
Enrolment can be at either the Wahroonga main school or at the satellite class at St Joseph's Narrabeen. The enrolment process involves collaboration between parents, educators and other professionals. Placement is reviewed regularly but generally children who are transitioning to mainstream schools benefit from 2 years in the program.
Close liaison occurs between St Lucy's School and the child's new school. Parents are supported in their decision making by the teachers, Principal and other professionals who may be involved.
