Spiritual development
Our ethos
Children come to St Lucy's, not because they are of the Catholic faith, but because they need us.
We seek to provide that nurturing educational environment in which each individual will flourish.
Our Dominican heritage is central to our mission. It includes a commitment to truth, to social justice and to respect for the spiritual journey of each individual.
Our school ethos rests on Catholic values and traditions. We start each day with sacred songs. Daily prayers are held in each class. The children take part in regular liturgies, both at the school, and at the Holy Name parish church. The outworking of our religious foundation is to be seen in our emphasis on respect for the dignity of each person, and valuing the gifts of each as an expression of their Creator.
We see difference as the specialness of each individual: neither less nor more, but unique. Each child's achievements are measured against their own benchmark and celebrated. Ours is a school of joy.
The goals of our religious education programme are:
- To help the children to know the stories of Jesus, his friends and family
- To encourage development of relationship with a personal, loving God
- To develop an appreciation of the wonder of God's creation and God's love
- To tell the Christian story through history, including the lives of men and women of the past and today, who 'let their light shine' in God's service
- To teach the children to value themselves and others and to see the beauty in each other
- To develop their faith in a God that loves and provides for them: their sense that 'underneath are the everlasting arms'
- To support the personal growth and development of the children, acknowledging their feelings and helping them to put words to the Why of things
- To teach the children some of the rituals of the Church.
St Lucy's Chaplain is Sr Helen Merrin OP, a Dominican Sister. She is assisted by a pastoral worker, Mr Kevin Hale, a Deacon of the Parish of Waitara, who works one day a week at St Lucy's. Mr Hale’s role is to support parents and families. He can be contacted by ringing the school on 9487 1277.
