• Communication is the key focus of the English Curriculum at St Lucy’s. Communication incorporates the language modes of speaking and listening, reading, writing, viewing and representing. The use of technology is also key to the English Curriculum.
  • The students of St Lucy’s ‘speak and listen’ in a range of ways including through speech and augmentative and alternative forms of communication (AAC) such as Key Word Sign, visuals, electronic devices, writing, facial expression and body language
  • Vocabulary is recognised as key to comprehension and a student’s ability to communicate about their interests, ideas, needs and wants. Specific language is targeted through English and all other Key Learning Areas
  • The themes and texts selected for the different Stage groups each year are designed to enhance student’s engagement, creativity and imagination, enjoyment of literature and to motivate them to interact with others in a range of ways
  • The skills based aspects of reading and writing such as phonics, sight word knowledge, letter formation, spelling and typing are taught explicitly and supported by our Reading Tutor Program and the use of evidence-based programs
